THE MUSEUM

The Naturalistic Museum is an exhibition structure with primarily scientific and educational purposes of the Marturanum regional natural park. It is located in Barbarano Romano (VT) and is part of the park's multifunctional center in via IV Novembre, at the southern entrance of the town on the road to Rome via the Cassia state road 2 or the provincial road 493 Braccianese.

Its organization is designed to facilitate, preceding or following it, the visit of the territory allowing a better understanding of its peculiarities and a deepening of the most interesting naturalistic aspects.

Some rooms distributed on two levels, connected to each other by a spiral staircase, are dedicated to telling the different natural environments of Viterbo's Tuscia through didactic panels, ad hoc set-ups, dioramas, LCD screens.

Of particular visual impact is the reconstruction of an Etruscan tomb and, in particular, of a tuffaceous valley with its vertical walls frequented by numerous species of birds and mammals.

The geomorphology of the territory and its evolution, the ecological importance of the forest and large trees, the traditional breeding of wild cattle, the Etruscan necropolis are among the topics illustrated. On display a rich herbarium, an entomological collection (insects such as butterflies and beetles) and a herpetological one (amphibians and reptiles), some species of birds with wooden reproductions or precious specimens preserved with taxidermy techniques like a great eagle owl.

The visitor center, associated with the museum, offers publications and brochures on the fauna and flora of the park, on Barbarano Romano and its Etruscan necropolis, and maps of tourist and hiking trails.

It is the right place to visit to prepare for the excursion to the Marturanum regional park or while waiting for a sudden rain to stop!
